About Nokia Research Center Bangalore
Nokia Research Center (NRC) aims at the pursuit of long-term research and the development of breakthrough technologies in the areas that are critical to the success of Nokia. NRC has laboratories around the world, each with distinctive research focus areas. Rich context is characterized by the use of a wide range of sensor information to aggregate data into a coherent context model. This data and its analysis form the backbone for a new class of services taking the full advantage of mobile technology. New user interface will need to integrate the personalization and adaptive aspects, taking into consideration of the dynamic nature of usage contexts, both in terms of physical and socio-cultural aspects.
Located in Bangalore, India, the team focuses on enabling technologies and design of mobile solutions with particular attention to emergent markets, especially India. A special emphasis is placed on prototyping user experiences and user trials for generating empirical and culturally relevant findings.
Main purpose of the job
The research scientist will be involved in the whole of research process, ensuring the technology innovation is going in the right direction for the context and the target users. You are expected to be knowledgeable in all known methodologies in HCI, some through empirical experience. You are confident in leading the field research team in multi-cultural environment. Furthermore you are motivated to experiment and develop new working methodologies suitable and adapted for emerging market services. You have hands-on attitude towards developing concepts through working prototypes and running pilots. Working in dynamic multidisciplinary team of designers, user researchers, developers, you are also expected to be proactive in proposing new domain areas for research and establishing relationships and collaborative opportunities within and outside Nokia.
Responsibilities
Acts as inspiring scientist and role model for world-class research
Drives the research projects towards completing their mission by
Identifying research opportunities and creating project plans that will have high impact on NokiaĆs future strategy
Research on gathering user insights and translating them into system requirements encompassing the mobile terminal, the server, and other enablers in the eco-system
Running pilots with concept prototypes while actively looking for novel approaches to do so especially in the context of emerging markets
Deliverying to-the-point, effective analysis reports on the pilot and user research
Designing and implementing the concepts as prototypes to run pilots and taking the lessons from pilots to improve the concepts
Working with design and implementation team maximizing the synergy of multidisciplinary research team
Actively seeking technology transfer opportunities within Nokia
Publishing the relevant knowledge in respected academic venues
Establishing close collaborative relationships with other teams in NRC Beijing and NRC worldwide
Coordinating and mentoring subcontractors and intern students for the project
Acts as research spokesperson for the respective technology area for Nokia
Understands academic, business and technology landscapes of mobile solutions industry, playing an active role in identifying the potential technology transfer options through the system design
Qualifications
Qualifications
Masters or equivalent academic degree in HCI, interaction design, computer science or related fields
Proven record of research experience in relevant fields and academic publication
4+ years of experience in running pilots and field research in relevant industries
Excellent public presentation skills and spoken English
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Team player in multidisciplinary environment
Strong programming skills in C/C++
Programming experiences in QT, Symbian, or Java a plus
Prototyping experience using Flash or Java
Personally motivated to contribute to research removing the digital divide in emerging markets and globally
Minimal requirements for eligibility
Masters or higher academic degree with professional experience in HCI, interaction design, computer science or related fiels. Please note that those who do not meet the degree qualifications should have alternatively minimum of 3 years of professional experience as HCI expert to be considered for this position with strong portfolio.
Existing academic publications in recognized human-computer interaction venues in India and internationally (files of the publications required)
Proven portfolio demonstrating interaction design and prototyping skills as well as usability research
2+ years of running projects developing working prototypes and user trial with technology prototypes in relevant subject matter and industry
Mastery with one or more of the following prototyping tools: Flash, QT, Python, Java, Symbian, C/C++, demonstratable with existing products or prototypes on request
